Site notes
The Homosassa station is located at 28° 46.34' N (28.772° N) and 82° 42.43' W (82.707° W) on the top of USCG channel marker #26 at the entrance to Homosassa river, Citrus County, Florida. It is a 5-pile wooden structure with a 4 ft by 4 ft platform. The SW and NE sides display `26' on a triangular red day shape. The red Coast Guard navigation light is a 4-second flasher 16 ft above MHHW. Onboard instrumentation monitors Wind Speed/Direction, Relative Humidity/Air Temperature, Barometric Pressure, Precipitation, Water Level, Water Temperature and Salinity. Data is hourly transmitted via the GOES satellite for internet posting as well as radio modemed directly to the Citrus County Office of Emergency Management. Site funding is via a cooperative effort between the Citrus County Office of Emergency Management and the University of South Florida's/College of Marine Science.
USCG Channel Marker #26 was severely damaged, most likely by ship impact, in the early morning hours of August 2, 2009. The impact sheared off the entire header and all of the COMPS onboard instrumentation equipment was damaged. Day boards and navigation beacon has been restored by USCG personnel. However, no existing funds are available to re-instrument the marker at this time or in the near future. Please check back periodically for updates as they become available.
